When teaching young children feels harder than it should

No matter what you try, nothing seems to work

The games get old fast. The activities you find online don’t really build understanding or hold the kids' attention for very long. They start to get bored and get rowdy. You start to feel uncertain and slowly lose control of your class. You resort to speaking in the kids' language because you feel they don't understand you anyway. You feel more like a babysitter than a teacher and seriously start doubting your worth.

You're doing too much without enough support

You want to do your job well but find yourself spending more time preparing your lessons than actually teaching them. And that would be ok if they worked, but they often don't. How English is Fun! came to be

I began rebuilding everything from the ground up. I stopped asking, "How should we teach English?" and started asking, "How do young children naturally learn?"

What emerged was a thematic program structured around developmentally appropriate experiences where every movement, every game, every interaction worked together to promote children’s natural learning skills while fostering their physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and language development. Every experience had a purpose. Nothing was random. Nothing was filler.

For the first time, I was actually teaching, really teaching. For the first time, the kids were actually acquiring the language —the infrastructure of the English language— not just words or songs whose meaning was unclear. It became my method, and I called it English is Fun! (EIF) mainly because the kids loved it, but also to counteract what I had been feeling up to that moment: that teaching English to kids was not fun at all!

EIF is an inclusive method, which allows every child to thrive. It is unique as it intertwines a solid pedagogical base with an educational program for children.

It is also a complete system that includes:

  • Research-based English teacher training

  • Ready-to-use curricula

  • Ongoing support

  • An established methodology

  • A clear progression from toddlers through primary years

EIF Yellow Stage Program

Generally suitable for children ages 4-8

There is no reading or writing in the Yellow Stage program; no starting point, no finishing line, and no levels, thus making it inclusive for all children.

The program works perfectly on its own when used with private classes, but because it is not structured around grammar, it integrates wonderfully with any pre-school, kindergarten, and early elementary curricula, helping children use and develop their natural learning skills while igniting their curiosity and love of learning. All in English, of course.

Lesson planning is no longer a task for teachers with English is Fun! as EIF Yellow Stage Thematic Bundles provide lessons that deliver time and again; lessons that work with children’s development instead of against it. The bundles are available for purchase upon completion of the Teacher Training.

Hi, I'm Adriana Cantisani

Everyone calls me Adri, though. I’ve been a teacher of English as a foreign language since 1992, and in 2001, I created English is Fun! (EIF)—a method designed to teach English to young learners in a natural, engaging, and developmentally appropriate way.

Since then, I have trained more than 1,000 teachers and supported the introduction of EIF in schools and private educational settings across Italy, working with thousands of children of different ages and learning profiles. My work has also led to national television collaborations and educational productions.

I hold a degree in Italian Studies with a minor in Cognitive Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, and I am certified in the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE-Basic) program. My approach combines cognitive development principles with hands-on classroom practice.

Today, EIF continues to evolve with one goal: to make teaching English to children clearer, easier, and more impactful for every teacher who uses it.

Today, EIF continues to evolve with one goal: to make teaching English to children clearer, easier, and more impactful for every teacher who uses it.

How English is Fun! was created

I began rebuilding everything from the ground up. I stopped asking, "How should we teach English?" and started asking, "How do young children naturally learn?"

What emerged was a thematic program structured around developmentally appropriate experiences where every movement, every game, every interaction worked together to promote children’s natural learning skills, while fostering their social, emotional, physical, linguistic, and cognitive growth. Every experience had a purpose. Nothing was random. Nothing was filler.

For the first time, teaching felt clear, predictable, and sustainable. For the first time, the kids were actually acquiring the language- the infrastructure of the English language- not just lists of words! It became my method and I called it English is Fun! because the kids loved it ... but also to counteract what I had been feeling up to that moment: that teaching English was not fun at all!

EIF is an inclusive method which allows every child to thrive. It is unique as it intertwines a solid pedagogical base with an educational program for children ages 4-8 called EIF Yellow Stage.

And today, my EIF Yellow Stage Thematic Bundles provide teachers with lessons that deliver time and again; lessons that work with children’s development instead of against it.

About Adri

Portrait of Adriana Cantisani, founder of English is Fun!

English is Fun! was created by Adriana Cantisani, an educator with over 30 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language. Active in Italy since 2001, she has trained more than 1,000 teachers, bringing EIF to thousands of children in schools and private educational settings.

With a degree in Italian Studies and a minor in Cognitive Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, and certification in the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE-Basic) program, her work bridges structured cognitive development with practical classroom application.

Over the years, the success of the method led to national television collaborations and educational programming, as well as the publication of two books focused on child development and early language learning. But her most significant work has always remained in the classroom refining a structured approach that aligns English teaching with how young children naturally grow, think, and learn. That structured approach is English is Fun!

FAQs

Who can become an EIF teacher?

Anyone who speaks English, enjoys being with children, and is ready to make a change in their life. All you need to do is enrol in the EIF Yellow Stage Teacher Training, which is completely online and consists of pre-recorded video lessons and 3 conference calls with me.

Do I need teaching experience?

No. The EIF Teacher Training begins with the foundations — including child development and how children actually learn language — and then builds step by step. You don’t need prior teaching experience with the English is Fun! method. By the end of the training, you’ll understand how to carry out your lessons, guide children naturally, and teach with purpose from the very beginning.

What age group does EIF cover?

The Yellow Stage is for childen from about 4 to 8 years of age and the Blue Stage is for children from about 1-3. Each stage is designed to work with children of different ages — even within the same group. During the teacher training, you’ll learn how to adapt activities, manage mixed groups, and upgrade lessons for older children when needed.

How is EIF different from other methods?

Most methods don't offer specific training courses for their teachers and when they do, they usually just give you the theory; you then get to design your own lessons. English is Fun! is a complete system which includes a unique communicative approach that helps children understand you from the very first lesson—without translation—and tried and tested, developmentally structured lesson plans to use with your children. There is no guesswork involved. Ever.

What if I don’t have much time to study?

The course was designed for people with full schedules. You can watch the lessons in short segments and move through the training at your own pace. Most teachers complete the program comfortably within the 3 month access period without feeling overwhelmed.

What if something is not clear or I have questions?

You can always ask me directly. Remember, the course is made up of pre-recorded videos but also includes 3 conference calls with me.

Does this method work with kids of different ages or in mixed-age groups?

Yes. The method is designed to work with children of different ages — even within the same group. During the training, you’ll learn how to adapt activities, manage mixed groups, and upgrade lessons for older children when needed.

Do I have to use the Yellow Stage Thematic Bundles for my lessons?

The training is tightly connected to the Yellow Stage program. However, a lot of what you will learn during the EIF Yellow Stage training will be applicable in all your lessons, regardless of the program you use or the activities you do with your kids. I think you'll find not having to plan your lessons a big plus and using a program with your kids where they truly learn an even bigger plus. In fact, I am so sure of this that I'm gifting you a thematic bundle when you enrol in the training so you can check it out for yourself.

When will I receive my bonus Thematic Bundle?

I'll send it to your inbox as soon as you finish the course, along with your EIF Teacher Certificate.

How long will I have access to the course?

3 months from the moment you enrol.
